The Process

My pieces are each one-of -a-kind. Starting with a white earthenware clay body, I wedge the clay and form it into long coils, which I flatted into slabs with a rolling pin. The slabs are then connected one on top of the other. I shape and form the piece with my hands, metal and rubber rib tools.

This is a slow process as the piece must be allowed to stiffen just the right amount so it is supported and additional clay can be added as I form the piece upward.

When the sculpting is complete, I cover the piece with canvas and plastic to allow slow and even drying. When the piece is dry I then sand the surface to smooth any rough spots. The pieces are bisque fired to cone 04, 1900 degrees F. I spray on most of my glazes and then fire them again to cone 04.

Some pieces are fired multiple times to create the finished look I desire.
